reachAbility - What We Do

reachAbility currently runs two in-house education programs that help persons with disabilities, who are job-ready, to work on their time management and goal setting skills, and to address their challenges to employment with our 2-day MEGA course, and on building their confidence and communication skills with our 5-day ASSET course.

The 4-Youth program, which was previously successful, is also running again. This is an in-house, on-the-job youth employment-training program, which helps youths become job-ready in our office environment.

Although we specialize in helping persons with disabilities re-enter the workforce through our educational programming, we also offer training and expert consultation with our Disability Awareness Training (DAT) through our partnership with IDEA, and our follow-up e-Learning (online) modules.

In keeping with our commitment to initiate research and new knowledge opportunities, reachAbility's promising study into youths with disabilities in conflict with the law (RYDLE), which was conducted in the Halifax region, is now going to be continued throughout the province of Nova Scotia (YOD).

reachAbility also provides opportunities for lawyers to become active partners in promoting equality and justice for persons with disabilities, with our Legal Referral Service (LRS). We also run a Community Outreach Initiative (COI), where we identify a topic relevant to persons living with disabilities and the community, and then we invite a lawyer to speak on that topic. reachAbility believes that public legal education is very important and so we also offer a (legal-based) Plain Language Legislation (PLL) translation service for documents and publications, enabling persons with disabilities to have full access to the issues that affect them.

reachAbility provides organizational and employment development for individuals, professionals, organizations, and entire communities in the context of disability through our programs and services.

reachAbility actively engages all sectors of our communities in our work and we coordinate events for sharing information and raising awareness for disability issues. We develop knowledge and consciousness about the rights and interests of persons with disabilities through research and educational activities in our communities. We also keenly encourage the support of volunteers throughout our organization.

We are an information resource base through our board members, staff, services, reference library, and our website. Through education, we are empowering persons with disabilities and giving them opportunities to move further forward with their lives, giving them more independence, and enabling them to become fully integrated in mainstream employment and society.
