Community Outreach Initiative (COI)

reachAbility's Community Outreach Initiative connects lawyers and relevant experts with various organizations and communities, by organizing FREE information sessions. Once a topic relevant to persons living with disabilities and the community has been identified, a lawyer (volunteering their time) is then invited to address the legal matter. The sessions are usually an hour in length, and include a question and answer period.

reachAbility is increasing disability awareness pertaining to the law, for persons living with disabilities and the entire community, and anyone is welcome to attend. These series of discussions on the issues relating to access to justice for persons with disabilities are conducted across the province of Nova Scotia, to share relevant information and increase public awareness.

Persons living with disabilities are often unsure of legislation surrounding disability issues, so these sessions should leave the clients feeling empowered in regards to managing their legal concerns.

Aside from lawyers with specialized knowledge, other presenters and agencies with expertise are also invited to participate. Topics range from: CPP, employment, tenancy, wills, entertainment, etc., and benefit persons living with disabilities and those who support them.

»FACT: There are no free educational sessions in Nova Scotia dedicated to persons with disabilities as well as those that support them.

»THEREFORE: reachAbility with numerous partners from across the province offer a series of discussions on legal issues relating to persons living with disabilities.

This program is generously supported by The Law Foundation of Nova Scotia.
