Now that you have these positive labels you can start challenging the negative ones:
What are some negative labels you have had put on you?
Now ask yourself:
- Are they really true?
- What lead you to choose these particular descriptions?
- Do you see yourself the way you want?
Do you feel that any of your negative labels had elements of truth?
This is not entirely a problem. Other people can sometimes see parts of us that we cannot, or see our traits in a different light. We all have things that we can work on, and this information can simply help us to know ourselves better.
Take the information and, if you think there may be some truth to it, explore it. As you consider it, ask yourself - how can this feedback be helpful to me? If you can't answer that question, then it may be better to set it aside.
Removing the Stigma
As a person with a disability, it is important that you focus on what you CAN DO, not what you cannot do. Self-awareness and knowledge of your (dis)ability is extremely important.
