I am writing to express my deep appreciation for the support of reachAbility through the reachAbility Scholarship in Law. The financial support will go a long way to softening some of the pressures that life as a full time student involves. Without diminishing the importance of the financial support, I would like to express the profound impact that receiving the support of reachAbility has had on my identity as a student living with multiple sclerosis. Reading about the purpose of the scholarship in the initial stages of the application process gave me perspective on being confident in my identity and working to be my own advocate. Since writing the letter for the application about how MS affects my life as a student, I have been working to notice and appreciate the ways in which my life is different than the average student and the ways that those differences make me the best version of myself and will hopefully help me to be a good lawyer.
I am constantly negotiating my identity and position as a student relative to the other factors and commitments in my life (as I am sure all students are). It meant a lot to me to read in an article about the Scholarship in Law that reachAbility recognized the need to support students in the Faculty of Law. In a context where the discourse is often about competition, the fact that reachAbility has recognized value in having those whose perspectives have been touched by disability enhances my sense of belonging in and excitement with the program.
