Transition Fair 2014 was recently held at the Dartmouth Sportsplex on Nov. 25th, and Muffy Price was happy to be there to represent reachAbility as one of the more than 40 invited and exhibiting organizations offering guidance and information to aid in transition planning.
The fair's goal is to support students with programming adaptations and Individual Program Plans/Transition plans, their families and school staff in making post High School decisions based on services and supports available in the community. It was coordinated by a team of teachers and students from Ocean View Elementary, Astral Drive Junior High, Cole Harbour High and Charles P. Allen High.
Transition planning is a process of establishing educational programs for students with special needs that are related to their anticipated life goals. All students need to feel empowered to live as independently as possible as adults. To achieve this goal, it is important that transition planning considers all major aspects of a student’s adult life including employment, living arrangements, leisure and recreation activities, financial management, personal management and relationships.
