May 25-31, 2020: National AccessAbility Week (NAAW) marks a national celebration and recognition of the contributions made to our country by individuals living with disabilities. This year’s theme Because we can –is a nod to our CEO’s favorite line “I make a difference because I can!”

In honour of reachAbility’s 20 years of service to the community we are offering 40+ events over 7 days. This is no easy feat but thanks to our diverse partners across Nova Scotia and beyond we are proud to be presenting an impressive line up of talent dedicated to equalizing their playing fields.

reachAbility Association is honoured to be the host agency for the Province of Nova Scotia and we are excited to shine a spotlight on the many individuals, organizations and businesses who are actively making a difference and raising awareness about accessibility and inclusion of all citizens in their communities - because they can.

NAAW may bring accessibility and inclusion to the forefront but here at reachAbility, the conversation never stops. Individuals with disabilities are at the core of our country and always have been. They are our leaders, our innovators, our artists, our students, our colleagues, and our families.

Did you know that 1 in 4 Nova Scotians identifies as living with disability(s)?

Creating a country that is accessible and inclusive to all of our citizens is essential - after all, we all have, have had, or will have a disability in our lifetime.

As an organization reachAbility’s commitment to making a difference because we can is clear. That’s why for the second year in a row we are excited to be bringing key players in accessibility and inclusion to the table. At NAAW 2020 - meet one of the authors of the Accessible Canada Act (ACA) or expand your learning with world-renowned mental health and inclusion specialist, Bill Wilkerson, who will be discussing the results of a new study on AI and mental wellness at work. Join us for a national conversation with NAAW stakeholders or take part in various opportunities for learning and advancing your businesses' inclusive hiring strategies. Even NGO’s that want to make a difference are welcome to participate in our province-wide Open House Project.

If that were not enough, we are proud to welcome BAAFF: The Bluenose-Ability Arts & Film Festival as our week-long event partner.

BAAFF events are free to attend including the hilarious 19+ Because I Can Laugh Comedy Showcase (featuring Cathy Jones and more), various film events, family activities and so much more.

Meet both BAAFF Artists in Residence; Anna Levine (children’s author) and filmmaker Brad Rivers. No matter how you see yourself BAAFF welcomes you to engage both the artists and the art!

So; Join reachAbility and our P3 Partners from May 25th to May 31st, 2020 for what is sure to be an enlightening, engaging, experiential week; jam-packed with community, education, innovation and culture!

We wouldn’t have it any other way!

Sincerely,
Tova Sherman
