Is Common Sense Common?
In today’s age of technology, we are becoming highly dependent on IT in every facet of our personal and professional lives. This is why we all need to reflect and ensure we are not forgetting to use common sense in support of problem solving and decision making.
If we use common sense in the right context, it can help support us in feeling more confident in all aspects of daily activities. When we create a history of good decision making, that makes us more likely to apply common sense moving forward.
That is the good news: the more you use it, the more confident and likely you are to apply common sense to your daily life.
The first step in common sense thinking is to not rush. Stopping what we are doing and reflecting on what outcomes we want to take away from any given situation allows us to react more carefully in applying both words and actions.
Mundane examples include choosing to take bread from the bread bag without resealing the bag, or when we repeatedly hang a used (wet) towel over another (clean) towel already on the towel rack.
We are not using common sense.
In the workplace the same principal applies. We advise that managers talk about common sense at work and support them to analyze and reflect on an issue before “jumping in to a decision”. Better yet, engage your diverse staff and gain diverse ideas on problem solving.
Now that’s using your common sense!
