Media Advisory  10 May 2019

reachAbility Association is proud to be the designated host agency for National AccessAbility Week 2019 (NAAW) across Nova Scotia. This national week of celebration is dedicated to the inclusion of persons with disabilities and the many contributions being made by them across Canada.

"It is truly inspiring to be selected to lead the province in honouring some of our most disenfranchised citizens. With over 20 years of commitment to persons with disabilities, reachAbility is well positioned to maximize inclusion and education during National AccessAbility Week," said Tova Sherman, CEO of reachAbility Association, which will coordinate activities across the province from May 27th to June 2nd.  “We’ve been asked to coordinate NAAW in Nova Scotia for the next four years,” adds Sherman. “It’s a big responsibility so we’re focused on province-wide impact this year and growth for the next three.” Now in its 20th year, reachAbility is a grassroots non-profit which provides supportive and accessible programs to build capacity for inclusion.

This year’s NAAW coincides with the federal government’s introduction of new national accessibility legislation which aims to eliminate barriers faced by people with disabilities in sectors under its jurisdiction.  To celebrate, a full calendar of activities (see attached) will highlight the many progressive initiatives underway in Nova Scotia - and there is no charge to attend any events:

  • Open houses hosted by community partners across NS

  • Screenings by the Bluenose Arts & Ability Film Festival (BAAFF)

  • Speaking Tour with Mark Wafer, award-winning employer & pioneer of successful inclusive workplaces

  • Comedy Night at Yuk Yuk's, “NAAW on This,” hosted by Cathy Jones

  • Flag raising & Fireside Chat “The Real Face of Mental Health”

  • Legal information seminar

  • “Opening Doors for Everyone” (ODE) presentations throughout rural NS
