reachAbility Association is proud to be the designated host agency for National AccessAbility Week 2019 (NAAW) across Nova Scotia. This national week of celebration is dedicated to the inclusion of persons with disabilities and the many contributions being made by them across Canada.
As we transition throughout our lifetime we all at times struggle with finding meaning and purpose in life; including family, community, and employment. If there is one thing I have learned in my job (as a Facilitator) it is that opportunities are there for all of us.
Narcissus is a figure of Hellenic tragedy. A beautiful boy who was so obsessed with his own reflection that he fell into a lake and drowned. This is where the word ‘narcissist’ comes from — describing someone who is completely in love with their own appearance, their talents, and their achievements. And while nobody goes to a lake to look at their self, there are other ways to get lost in your own reflection.
The thing is, these barriers we face to employment are not our ‘disabilities’. These barriers are prejudices that have no bearing on what we can do and how well we can do it. They are put up by individuals who are unwilling to believe that others who are not like them can function as well as them.
